  4rail.net - Estonia - Diesel Locomotives

Welcome to the Estonian Diesel Locomotives page! The East meats the West in Estonia, creating an interesting mix of the rolling stock. Despite the small size of the country, there are also a great number of locomotives available. The electric locomotives, untypically for an European country are nonexistent in Estonia for the moment. There are also pages for the Estonian Diesel Multiple units, Estonian Electric Multiple Units and Estonia MOV Equipment.

 Road Diesel Locomotives

 TEP70 / ???70

Tep70 is the most common Russian passenger diesel locomotive seen outside Russia today. This locomotive can be found daily on the Go Rail train pair between Tallinn Estonia and St Petersburg Russia. Couple of RzD units can also be seen in Narva Estonia most of the time parked on the Estonian side near the passenger station. On the Edelraudtee depot south of Tallinn it seems like many units around the 5ft network are serviced regularly.

The Soviet Union bought in 1971 a Hawker Siddeley "Kestrel" locomotive, tested it, dismantled it into pieces and further tested the parts. The Tep70 prototype to copy the test locomotive was put together in 1973, but needed several modifications to cab windows, bogies, gear arrangement, dynamic braking, etc. before the production was finally started. The current model Tep70BS (not a very attractive name addition in English) has minor changes at least to the design.

 2TE116 / 2??116

2TE116 is a common work horse for the heavy road freight movements of the RZD, private Russian companies like Transoil or Spacecom and numerous users in Estonia. Even Eesti Raudtee is rumored to have a couple of these. A true monster locomotive with enough pulling power for just about any road need. The locomotive is unsuitable for any switching work because of its poor visibility  behind. The Russians were unable to thing multipurpose use at the time of designing the 2Te116. However, by now the locomotive has proved its success both in Russia and a number of other countries around it with 5ft gauge.

 Multipurpose Diesel Locomotives

 C36-7i
C36-7i is used as a multipurpose heavy freight locomotive for the Eesti raudtee. The American standard cab looks inside pretty spartan to Europeans, but the engine sound levels are incredibly low, except for the brake valve leaking the air into cabin with a loud noise. You can expect to see this locomotive usually waiting for the assignments in all the largest stations in Estonia.

 C30-7i
C30-7i is the smaller brother for the C36-7i and used in similar assigments in Estonia. Currently it seems like there could be more use for them. With any smaller axle weight these locomotives would find home around the European tracks, but over 30 metric ton axle weight is far over the weight what the current networks can survive.

 TEM2 / TEM3
TEM2 and TEM3 are numerous and they can be found anywhere in the ex. Soviet territory. These locomotives looks very much like the origin, where the Soviets copied and altered them: an early Alco road switcher!
