Finnish Diesel Locomotives

Welcome to the Finnish Diesel Locomotives page! Majority of the types used can be found on this page and many classes also have their dedicated sub pages. There are also pages for the Finnish Electric Locomotives and Multiple Units as well as the MOV Equipment.

VR-Yhtyma Dv12 number 2710 in Tampere, Finland
Picture above: A typical Finnish built diesel locomotive, the type Dv12 number 2710 is seen at Tampere large freight yard with one of the dozens daily trains from the paper mills around the area. This loco can be can be used as a radio controlled unit when switching. Dv12 is used widely a s a road switcher, but it is not capable of doing any serious local switching on the larger yards because of the switch oil overheating. Around 170 units are in active duty in the roster.

Below: A typical use for numerous Dv12 class locomotives before the electrification progressed: one locomotive can easily pull 3 to 4 blue-gray coaches on the regional trains up to 125 km/h ( mph). When more power is needed for an extra coaches, in the large there was always a spare locomotive to add to the consist. Picture below by Hannu Peltola.
Dv12 number 2610 leading a passenger train to Pieksamaki, Finland

The class DV12 diesel locomotives can be seen most anywhere on the Finnish rail network working all kinds of duties from the light passenger trains on the nonelectrified lines to heavy road freight run in multiple, or road switching duties around the network. In the earlier days these multipurpose workhorses were a common sight pulling blue-gray coaches on regional trains. One or two units were the norm for any train.

Since the use of the locomotives has changed to more freight use, there are a few problems associated with this: most of the Dv12 units are unable to do heavy switching because of the overheating of the gear box oil, which means these units are very ineffective with this kind of assignment with frequent idling periods letting the lube oil temperature to drop back to acceptable level. A few are rebuilt to overcome the heating problem, but in most cases the better designed class Dr14 are doing all the heavier switching duties.

While 11+ units have been retired from the Dv12 roster and used as spare parts for the rest, the rebuilding program for this relatively successful locomotive series is still running. If repainting is needed (paint on some of the units is badly worn out) the color of choice is now salad green making the fleet interesting with most colors cream and red, many "Intercity" type red-white-gray and now the newest rebuilt units showing handsome green-white-gray with large VR logo taped to advertise the operator on the both sides. The loco number lettering for the green scheme in golden on sides and black in the front.

 VR-Yhtyma Dr14 "Zebra"
VR-Yhtyma Dr14 number 1859 in Kouvola, Finland
Pictures Above and below: .
VR-Yhtyma Dr14 number 1859 in Imatra, Finland

VR-Yhtyma Dr14 number 1859 in Imatra, Finland
The Dr14 class 24 locomotives form the only heavy use switcher and freight road locomotive for the VR-Yhtyma. Although the locomotives are aging in their use, they have been kept in the perfect condition with the careful work by the VR maintenance people. All units even went through an upgrade and modernizing program in the early 2000s.

The Zebras graze in the larger harbors of Finland along with the major freight yards with busy traffic. Normally these are stationed in the following order, some additional unit can be found in addition to these: Helsinki Ilmala depot 2 units, Sjöldvik oil refinery near Porvoo 1 unit, Kotka harbor 1 unit, Imatra forest industry traffic 3 units, Vainikkala border area 1 - 2 units, Tampere 2 units, ...

Why the nickname Zebra? This locomotive with it's bright coloring and stripes truly looked like something from the other age in the late 1960's when the units were built. Today the livery still seems quite in place, and probably everyone is fearing when the first Zebra stripes will be covered with salad green paint that is in fashion for repainting the rolling stock for the VR-Yhtyma now.

modernized and rebuilt to current standard, preserving the original
engine and hydraulic power structure
-> Numbers built: 24
-> Numbers in operation: 24, most valuable freight locomotive for
the whole VR-Yhtyma

-> Seen: Finland, locations where heavy switching is needed

-> Energy Source: Diesel fuel

-> Braking effort on traction motors (dynamic braking): na

-> Wheel arrangement: B'B'
-> Wheel diameter: 1050 mm as new
-> Maximum operational speed: 75 or 35 km/h (46 or 22 Mph) depending
on the locomotive, at least Helsinki and Imatra have 35 km/h units in use

-> Length: 14,0 m
-> Heigth: 4,7 m
-> Width: 3,2 m
-> Weight: 68 / 86 metric tons ( lb), heavier units with added weight
-> Max. axel weight: 19,5 / 21,5 metric tons

-> Train control systems: JKV, equipped for Finland
-> Remote radio control equipped: Yes
-> Multiple operations capacity with: class
-> Couplers: Vapiti, semiautomatic hook and chain plus SA3

-> Specials/other:
- The type is commonly nicknamed for "Zebra" (Seepra)
- the top speed of several locomotives have been reduced to mere 35 km/h!
Most probable reason for this is a bad shape of the mechanics or missing
JKV train control in units, if the previous reason VR will probably be looking
for a successor for the type for heavy switching in the coming years.
- Type is the ONLY locomotive used in Finland suitable for serious heavy every
day switching.
- Dr14 is commonly used in Helsinki, Sköldvik, Tampere, Kotka, Imatra,
Vainikkala and Kokkola for heavy switching

VR-yhtyma Dr16 number 2816, Joensuu, Finland
Dr16 is the most modern diesel locomotive for the VR to this date. It is mainly used for passenger and freight traffic in the north of Finland on the routes still waiting for electrification. The basic design is modular, but fixing these beasts nowadays takes imagination, since many parts are hard to find after two decades of use only for this small series. With the design of true diesel electric locomotive, it should be straightforward to replace all the top components with parts from more common other locomotive if need be. One unit has been wrecked, retired and used as spare parts.

Climbing to the drivers quarters seems to be awfully long way up on this beast, but because of the height the visibility is great from up there! The cumbersome design also prohibited the large blondes to join the Dr14 for the heavy switching work. After tests any intentions for switching were trashed.

  2Te116 of the RzD - Border area heavy freight road locomotive
Finland RdZ Tep70 number 0217 in Vainikkala

Finland RdZ Tep70 number 1566 in Imatra, Finland

The 2Te116 is a common work horse for the heavy road freight movements of the RZD near the Finnish border. Most locomotives seem to be stationed in Viipuri, an old Finnish city just 20 kilometers on the Russian side of the border after WW2. The 2Te116 is a true monster locomotive with enough pulling power for just about any road need. The locomotive is unsuitable for any switching work because of its poor visibility  behind. The Russians were unable to think about multipurpose use at the time of designing the 2Te116. However, by now the locomotive has proved its success both in Russia and a number of other countries around it with the 5ft gauge. Only draw back of the use is the relatively heavy axle weight for use in Europe outside the Russia.

Technical details for type 2Te116

  Miscellaneous Finnish Switchers

A few C600 units still exist in rebuilt form. This locotractor could earlier also be found in Sweden, but it is likely that the Swedish units are all scrapped. This unit is was taking care of teräspyörä / Saalasti switching in Kouvola.
