Finland Timeline for the year 2010 Toughest Winter for Years in Finland Just after Christmas started the toughest winter in Finland for years. The cold period lasted until the end of February, with temperatures down to -25 and up to two meters of snow (in piles) even on the southern coast, the record amount for at least a decade. The severe cold, ice and snow have caused delays and cancellations on the traffic and this has caused added strain to operator VR-Yhtyma, which runs the trains for itself and the Helsinki Metropolitan train owner company PKJ (Pääkaupunkiseudun Junakalusto Oy). The additional costs for operating in the severe conditions were counted to be several million according to VR-Yhtyma. Especially hit on the Helsinki area were new Alstom/CAF built Sm4 local trains and the 1970's built Sm1 type, while the new Flirt/Sm5 trains have been at home just like in the snows of Switzerland. (added 1/2010) To the Top of the Page Finland Timeline for the year 2009 Helsinki Main Metro station flooded The Helsinki Metro station at Helsinki Main was severely flooded in December causing closing of the station for two months repair period. Stairs were repaired and elevators had to be completely rebuilt. Tens of thousands of people used the nearby Kaisaniemi and Kamppi Metro stations meanwhile. The cause for the incident was a ruptured old main water line on the street level. The line runs in the concrete casing to direct the flood to the street in case of the rupture. However, this time the concrete casing had been punctured, probably for easier access to maintain the nearby piping, which way the water also found its way to the Metro. The above Metro train is a Bombardier built unit 222 of type M200. The station is on ground in Vuosaari in the eastern suburb of Helsinki. (added 12/2009) Flirt EMUs were taken into production use in Helsinki area After one years thorough trials the first Finnish class Sm5 Flirt EMUs were taken into use for the Helsinki Metropolitan area. 30 more 4 module units will follow until 2014, when all of the 32 train order should be delivered. Due to Stadlers excellent orders situation it might take a while before the next EMUs will arrive. The Stadler built EMUs will add much needed capacity and replace some of the older totally obsolidated class Sm1 and Sm2 EMUs of VR-Yhtyma. The EMUs are co-owned by the cities of Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa (60%) and 40% by the VR-yhtyma of Finland. (added 12/2009) To the Top of the Page | ![]() Created for 4rail.net by John McKey.
