![]() Welcome to Georgian Picture Page! Here you will find some interesting rare pictures on the railroading on Caucasus at the border of Europe and Asia. Making a Stop at Night
Can Train on the Georgian Shoreline A Russian built VL10 electric locomotive pulls a string of tanks on the Gerogian shore line. The colors are still the same as in the Soviet period, although the tank cars have a "Petrol" (western) text on them and like the saying goes are not "filled by dipping them into oil" (like the old days). On the pictures below a typical 62 metric ton tank car, low capacity for todays Russia at least, but can be used on the lighter rail than the larger capacity ones. Pictures by Johan Ehnberg 2008. A lot of repairs seems to be needed to get the beatiful country rebuilt after Soviet period and after the Russians invaded the South Ossetia in the summer of 2008 (during the Olympic games in China). On the Georgian railways web site it was mentioned that the bridge exploded by Russians is now permanently fixed and all traffic that was stopped during the war has again been resumed. Interestingly, there also seems to be container traffic starting, a sure sign of the modernization of the railways!
