The local traffic in St Petersburg is a breathtaking combination of  different modes of transportation, as you will see on the picture story below. Click any picture to see the large version of it!

Picture: Er2 number 1291 passes by typical high rise new housing at the metropolitan St Petersburg. Picture by Stanislav Voronin 2009.

Picture: Tu-units from the Soviet era provide >fast< transportation deep underground St Peterburg. Many of the stations were built to look like palaces, with the old pompous architecture. This is interesting even today, just for other reasons. Picture above and below by Hannu Peltola 2009.

As with all the larger cities, the light rail provides needed additional capacity, where the speed is not so critical. Unit 5311 is one of the newer types recently built for Russia. Below is a picture of one of the numerous older trams of St Petersburg. Both pictures by Stanislav Voronin 2009.

[picture of the trolley bus]

Trolley buses for larger European or American cities are in many cases unavoidable, which is the case in St Petersburg as well. Below another more common local bus on newer generation. However, hopping from an airplane you still see the "wild west" of small private buses of all sorts running the routes. Pictures by Stanislav Voronin 2009.

 ...Get ready for surprises...

What about taking a hydrofoil to work? Here seen by the famous fortress near the center of St Petersburg. Or a short flight on the Mi8p helicopter! Pictures by Stanislav Voronin 2009.

While Russians have progressed steadily last few years in building the high speed networks the results are starting to show - here the previous generation high speed train just retired to the railroad museum. Soon the Velaro-Rus "Sapsan" units will replace the ER200 and Chs6 powered trains.
