Welcome to the new Visions Summer Pictures by Stanislav Voronin 2010 page which is a collection of some great pictures taken often in challencing the Finnish round the clock summer light, occasionally figting insects biting the photographer waiting for the train.

The subjects here are mainly from Finland, other pictures by author can be found on the Stanislav's Winter Visions PageFinnish Gallery page, Sokol High Speed page and Russian Gallery page. Some pictures from this collection can also be found on other pages of the 4rail.net.

Summer Pictures  -  the Allegro and Pendolino Trains!
Karelian Trains Allegro Pendolino Sm6 nr2 making it's way to Russian for certification beside the Kerava station, Finland
Pictures above and below, the Karelian Trains  Allegro  Pendolino number 02 made it's way to certification tests at the end of June, here seen in early morning light passing Kerava station. Unit 01 had been in three different testing installations in Russia already in April 2010. Two more units arriving late this summer are expected to go certification before the traffic starts at the end of the year. The added capacity by Karelian trains Pendolinos will supplement the Sibelius and Repin during the busy Christmas season.

The new high speed tracks will be built for this new traffic on both sides of the border so expect the demand to be _much_ higher than just 4 units! Karelian trains can easily acquire more units should the need arise. The Russian Railways RzD could also order more Velaros for this stretch, extending the route maybe even to Helsinki - St Petersburg - Moscow, and VR-Yhtyma in Finland could adapt and deploy some of it's 18 units Pendolino fleet to the international traffic.

The Allegro Pendolinos of Karelian Trains have both Finnish and Russian railway systems installed: the train is double current unit capable of using both 25kV 50 Hz (Finnish and Russian) and 3000V (Russian) electrical systems. It also has train control for both Finnish and Russian systems. ETCS is not yet implemented widely on the Finnish rail networks, so there is a need for old JKV system as well. Radio systems are installed for both countries. Notice the two pole sticking from the smooth Pendolino roof on the picture above and a wire between them! This must be similar radio system that you could find in use on many U.S. railroads in the pre WW2 era, even the measurements are about the same. Some old analog stuff still works well enough not to be replaced by newer model! Above the headlight behind the airconditioning unit looking bulge there are actually horns for both countries (as Russia is not part of the European Union, two systems are needed on everything...). The horns look pretty much like what you see in the U.S. What a shame they are covered, would had added much to the looks of the train!

VR-Yhtyma Pendolino and IC2 train meet at Kytomaa, near Kerava junction in Kerava, Finland
The VR-Yhtyma older Pendolino in traditional red high speed passenger colors and IC2 pass each other in Kytömaa, just north of Kerava junction on the Kerava - Lahti high speed track. The VR-Yhtymä is painting all of it's Electric multiple units, locomotives and passenger coaches green-white-gray when they come to need of repairs. The first green Pendolino nose can be found on the Finnish Gallery Page hiding inside the Turku maintenance building. By painting the rolling stock green VR wishes to send a message that it takes environmental issues seriously.
