  Innotrans 2014 subjective star was the Bombardier Monorail car. This was quite clearly the fair visitor's number 1 viewing target too with a constant flow of people through unit. Monorail car displayed is a real production unit and will be shipped to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia after the fair. While monorail is nota new invention, all the technology along with safety features in the vehicle were latest and solutions were clearly built the demanding climate in the usage area, including sand storms!

Bombardier Monorail at Innotrans 2014, Berlin, Germany

Bombardier had on display at Berlin Innotrans 2014 many interesting vehicles. Undoubtedly the most unusual of these was the Monoraill car unit for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia line. This was an actual car with all the equipment installed that is now on its way South.

Observations on both Bombardier technology and their success in sales confirmed that a new dawn for the monorail systems might be dawning. The systems are said to be quit and less expensive to build than other urban forms of rail transportation. Vehicles ride on concrete or steel beams and switches are arranged traditional way by moving blocks of track. Bombardier monorail today can reach all the way to capacity of up to 48'000 passengers per hour using longer trains than was on display here.

Monorail vehicles have an opening nose cone that hides the system to absorb efficiently energy in cases of emergency. The system also has a quite convincing anticlimber, unusual to this class of trains, but all the same a very important added safety feature you find in many developed trains markets. Under these installations is located a coupler for multiple unit running.

Bombardier has done a lot of design and development work on their monorail system. Some of the highlights of these are:
- computerized traffic control with 90 second interval running in real life service.
- low floor design helping for better ride.
- balanced drive mechanism with all parts visible and easily maintanable. Also the side of the train opens for easy access anywhere.
- critical parts protected from elements much better than in more conventional designs.
- crash resistance design.
- spacious well thought interiors.

Undoubtedly this will bring another interesting and efficient vehicle to Saudi Arabian traffic in capital Riyadh.

  High Speed EMUs

FS Bombardier built Fressiarossa 1000 at Innotrans 2014, Berlin, Germany

FS / Trenitalia Fressiarossa 1000 EMU built by Bombardier and AnsaldoBreda.

Sleek attractive lines this super high speed EMU were designed by Bertone, a famous Italian industrial designer. Thus this unit really gathered eyes. Besides being attractive the EMU is supposed to start a new era of train building in Italy.

"Fressiarossa 10000" is a cooperation project between Bombardier and ill fated Ansaldo-Breda of Italy. (A-B is also behind the Danish IC4 and IC2 DMUs as well as Dutch/Belgian V250 duckbill EMUs). Maybe this is gives a fresh start for AnsaldoBreda to start again as a trustworthy trainbuilder. For Bombardier this project gave a significant chance to enter the Italian train market, something that is considered quite protectionistic. Or maybe Italians just prefer Italian solutions?

Looking at the background in Italy the rocks started rolling forward when a new open access operator NTV entered the scene, first time seriously challenging the state operator FS / Trenitalia. Trenitalia did everything in its might (which is much) to keep the monopoly state in the high speed traffic but now after 7 years NTV has firmly secured some routes for its network. Things got so hot that at one point another state operator SNCF from France took a 15% share on NTV to keep things rolling. Likely reason for this might be that supplier for NTV trains was the French super high speed giant Alstom with its new AGV train type. Stopping only client (so far) for AGV might have endangered this segment in Alstom product portfolio.

Lets look at the trains a bit.
- FS has had for long class ETR 500 EMUs capable of running 300 km/h (and up?) / 186 mph. While this speed was challenged by NTV+AGV entering the market, FS decided to paint these trains for fifth time, now to red colors matching pretty much the NTV colors and most importantly making customers harder to understand the different trains of the two operators.
- NTV entered the market with their AGVs capable of running 360 km/h (depending on the configuration) / 224 mph. A serious challenge to FS.
- FS countered the attack by ordering Fressiarossa 1000 on a quick schedule from Bombardier + Ansaldo-Breda. These trains also run up to 360 km/h / 224 mph matching the competition.
- The campaign between the operators was fought in several fronts including international traffic for years. It will be interesting to see the financial data for NTV for the whole 2014 to see if the operator already has established a strong foothold.

One important aspect here is that Italy is one of the BIG super high speed line countries in Europe with an extensive network of lines between the larger cities.

  Electric Multiple Units

Stadler Flirt3 EMU for Serbia, Innotrans 2014, Berlin, Germany

Stadler Rail is supplying 21 Flirt 3 EMUs for Serbia.

This attractive modern EMU is the newest design in the large selection of Stadler Rail vehicles. It also advertises that there would be 1000 Flirt trains (of variants 1, 2 and now 3) sold. Stadler later revealed that the 100th Flirt will be manufactured to Junakalusto in Finland for use at Helsinki Metropolitan area transportation.

Železnice Srbije (ŽS) Flirt3s are tailored to the operators regional use needs. The four modules are low floor with one wide floor at each section. Only going over between the cars you have to climb a few steps as one would expect climbing over the bogie. As modules on Flirt trains are interconnected Jacobs bogie type, two modules share a common bogie creating less high floor area and less movable parts to maintain. In some countries less bogies might also mean less rail line charges.

ZS Flirt trians have 12 seats at first class and 246 in second. The trains is accessible for bikes, baby prams, elderly and disabled. It also has a sizable bathroom that all groups can use. This all is standard for Stadler Rail Flirts that have conquered much of the smaller operators markets in Europe during the last decade.

Starting power is 2600 kw and 200 kN electric motors located at the train ends. Vehicle total lenght here is 77,1 meters and weight 127 tons due to aluminum construction.

Another EMU definitely worth mentioning at Innotrans 2014 was the Bombardier Regio 2N of SNCF "Region Centre" area. Flashy painting here obscured somewhat the innovations this _multiple_unit_ in the word's true meaning has to offer.

First of all, Regio 2N clearly comes out of the drawing board of a true professional team. Besides of having high quality standard design it has surprisingly many innovations, the most important which is the design on passenger flows between the double decked seating modules and single story access and service modules. With these it is easy to create a train of any length needed. The wide double access doors between the seating modules allow unobstructed _fast_ flow of passengers to and from the platforms at European Union standard low floor level. No steps need to be taken. Pushing in and out baby carts and bikes is easy too. There are a few seats nearby the doors so elderly and slowly moving citizens don't need to climb up or down the adjacent coach steps, again design feature well thought.

Outwardly the design takes a bit further some of the solutions Bombardier's customers have found useful and rugged enough in hard use. For example looking at the hood of the train, while this looks nicely designed, it also follows in the footsteps of Francilien EMUs for Paris as well as some other recent Bombardier EMUs.

Since we have now looked inside lets take the slope inside the low floored EMU. Hre awaits probably the biggest surprise: the extremely flashy exterior gives away here to the almost barest inside. Gone are the cool LED effects the Franciliens (SNCF Z50'000) were playing with. Look for yourself at the pictures!

At each service module a standard, quite high tech and almost huge bathroom module is installed. Besides for serving ordinary travellers, this is also meant to be used with wheelchairs. Judging from what it looks like it really looks like this could be done. While we have seen this kind of bathrooms for 20 years in office and public buildings, this is still rare in today's trains, occupying lots of space. But since the EU regulations dictate that every train needs to have one, it can be found on this regional set too.

ZOS Vrutky was displaying its 3 car DMU for ZSSK of Slovakia. 12 MAN diesel equipped units were already in traffic and the enhanced second batch of 8 was at the time of the Innotrans 2014 in manufacturing. These 58 meters long vehicles will be Slovakians class 861 diesel multiple units.

GE PH37ACi locomotive at Innotrans 2014, Berlin, Germany

GE Transportation displayed the Power Haul PH37ACi heavy road diesel-electric locomotive. To be even more interesting the unit was disguised to Turkish TCDD colors, though not being part of the large batch built for the operator. Similar PH37ACi was located almost at the same place in Innotrans 2012 fair, but meanwhile 30 of this model and slightly smaller UK version PH37ACmi combined have been ordered and many delivered already. The main outward difference besides the loading gauge is that PH37ACi shown in pictures is a cowl unit while PH37ACmi has road switcher type outside walkways between the end cabs.

While highly successful in U.S. GE Transportation has so far been playing only minor role in Western Europe (all countries besides Russia and Belarus). The unusual appearance of course causes doubts about the overall quality despite GE Transporation strong reputation (GE is not known to use industrial designers for its locos). But the true reason is that most all European main routes are electrified and mainly electric locomotion used for freight hauling. Very few heavier diesel locomotives outside U.K. are thus used today.

Vossloh AG is a leading manufacturer of Diesel locomotives in Europe when you look both units sold in the long run and just recently. After the recession slump locomotive sales of this type are again said to be catching wind, propelling Vossloh forward.

Vossloh product lines at Innotrans 2014 comprised of four diesel locomotives, several trams and one high speed grinding machine. As a leading manufacturer much product development had been done again with models DE 18 and G12 shown. Three axle G6 switcher was displaying sign "Over 100 units sold", which is quite a remarkable result for a relatively new loco of this type. And truly when you move around after the fair, G6s can be found in use in Berlin too!

Vossloh also showed its UK class 68 / Eurolight UK model where last time the first Eurolight prototype was standing. Locomotives otuwardly looked quite identical except for finer detailing like lights and nose shapes. DRS operated and Beacon Rail owned Class 68 number 001 looked truly quite impressive in its traditional British coloring!

Eurolight and UK Light models are created for markets where the tracks are lightweight but relatively much power is needed despite of this.The normal heavyweight champions like Vossloh Euro 3000 or Euro 4000 would be too heavy for this kind of lines. Many same components across these product lines are however used.

  Diesel and Diesel-hybrid Switchers

CZ Loko class 794 number 001 switcher locomotive, Berlin, Germany

CZ LOKO of Czech Republic displayed their class 794 light shunter meant especially for tight loading gauges and lighter than normal track loads. The builder has had urban rail transportation systems in mind here. Serving many needs of these can be seen as strength of this design.

Besides for very low axled loads the locomotive is a quite modern design with a high visibility cab, modern AC/DC traction motors (according to customer specifications), quite roomy cab and sleek lines. The engine provides 328 kW / 440 hp power, quite enough for the need and up to 60 km/h / 37 mph speeds.

Ermewa class Shimms covered top flat car, Innotrans 2014, Berlin, Germany

Ermewa operates a fleet of 55'000 freight cars and another 50'000 various containers in Europe. For this reason you often see them just about anywhere around the European standard gauge rail networks.

The displayed class Shimms covered heavy duty flat car for steel giant Arcelor Mittal is a typical design in Ermeva fleet.

Danish Copenhagen fully automatic Metro systems seems to be ever expanding. To fulfill the needs of growing network of two additional lines AnsaldoBreda is supplying familiar automatic additional metro cars for these. The cars are form 2-6 modules long EMUs, have wide automatic doors for operations both outside and in concrete tunnels.

Copenhagen metro current massive building phase is expected to be finished by 2018.

Skoda tram for Konya, Innotrans 2014, Berlin, Germany

Czech manufacturer Skoda displayed at Innotrans one of 72 new 28 T trams for Turkish city of Konya. The unit displayed is capable of driving over 2 km sections of no overhead electric supply (much the way is done in France today with Alstom trams). The vehicles are 100% low floor with plug doors, air conditioning , rear view cameras. Skoda bet five other manufacturers in tendering due to its price, high quality and technical excellency. The value of order is around 105 million Euros. By May 2015 two first units were test running in Turkey, while thrid one was tested in Czech Republic.

Bombardier Twindexx set, Innotrans 2014, Berlin, Germany

Bombardier TWINDEXX driving trailers and coaches are the most popular modern double decked coaches today in Europe. Several generations of stock exist with gradual evolution on design and technologies. The latest at Innotrans 2014 were the long distance sets built for Deutche Bahn. While looks are still very much like their very much liked local and regional cousins, the interiors are fitted for comfortable and quiet long distance travelling.

The 27 train units will start their revenue traffic from 2015 onwards relieving capacity issues on ever growing German intercity traffic. These white with red stripe colored coahes will be psuhed and pulled by similarly colored 27 class 146.5. TRAXX P160 AC2 locomotives. From 2017 trians will be formed to run in Stuttgart area including Stuttgart to Zürich service. Basically similar coaches to the DB one laready are in use in Switzerland at SBB.

We all are accustomed to see Mercedes-Benz Unimog vehicles on various road and rail duties. Built as a platform for numerous machines, yet small enought to fit anywhere Unimogs can be found anywhere in Europe. Unimog C 405.105 was introduced at Innotrans 2014, taking the modular approach to slightly larger platform than before.

  BGM GmbH Badische Gleisbaumaschinen E-MV 100
BGM 8 axle E-MV 100 gravel car, Innotrans 2014, Berlin, Germany Maintenance always has multiple challenges. This special gravel carrier, especially run in multiple can effective tackle many of the challenges.

Special to this car is that it runs on 2 x 4 axles, keeping the axle weights as low as possible. For this purpose the car has two sets of "standard European freight bogies", joined together with structure that allows some independent movement to both of them. Intercar connections are made available with conveyor belt, so you can have a whole train of gravel cars operating as one unit.
