A rolling stock leasing company. In 2010 the company changed name from Angel trains to Alpha Trains at the same time new investors acquiring the former.

Currently the company leases a large fleet of passenger EMUs and DMUs and numerous locomotives to customers Europe 1435 mm network wide. Part of the fleet are for example TRAXX locomotives, several Vossloh diesels from switching power to huge Euro 4000 and class 66.

Arlanda Express operates airport shuttles between the center of Stockholm, Sweden and Arlanda airport north of the city. The company is legendary for customer service orientation and has a fleet of 7 Alstom Pre-Coradia EMUs painted bright yellow and white in its use.

In 2013 Arlanda express will face competition from the SL operated local EMUs basically on the same route (with additional stops). Elsewhere in Europe this kind of slower competitor has not been too challenging for the similar train operating companies.

With its Punctual German processes the company has been able to provide first class service for German freight and passenger sectors.   DSB, Danish Railways
DSB class ME number 1505 in Copenhagen, Denmark

DSB, the Danish Railways is a state owned operator for the Danish territory. DSB runs a large number of passenger services every day and also has some smaller freight activity.

Characteristics for Denmark is the lack electrification (started only in 1980s), which has led country's railways to serious situation. As you can see from the pictures below most rolling stock is very aged, heavily utilized and the DMUs that were supposed to replace much of the older fleet are not working the way it was planned, this after 10 years of trying to take these into use. As a result Denmark has now finally decided on large scale electrification of all main networks, as soon as possible. This work is steadily progressing and will both bring welcome relief to passengers in the form of newer standard European rolling stock and much faster travel times than today.

  Eesti Raudtee
Eesti Raudtee C36-7i unit 1529 at Narva yard, Estonia

Eesti Raudtee, the Estonian railways, has a colorful history. After the regained independence the company was sold to Ed Burkhardt who bought a large number of used GE manufactured C30-7is and C36-7is which were regauged to 1520 mm network. In addition EVR initially had old Russian Chem3 switchers and some 2Te116s.

After the Russian traffic to Estonian ports collapsed Burthardt sold the railroad company back to Estonian government, which still owns it.

Keila: Er2 local train unit 2201 to Tallinn, Estonia

Elektriraudtee was originally responsible for Estonian EMU traffic near Tallinn as the name "Elektri" suggests. It has ordered a large fleet of Stadler Flirt DMUs and EMUs that are just becoming online. These were for 85% financed by the European Union. The DMUs are a new for the company as the only Edelraudtee earlier operated / owned DMUs in Estonia.

Green Cargo Re Traxx locomotives 1424 and 1427 are hauling a steel slab train near Boden, Sweden

Green Cargo of Sweden was created in 2001 by splitting the Swedish state railways to several parts to kick start the competition on the Swedish networks. Green Cargo became the state owned freight rail operating company. It inherited a large number of Rc1, Rc2, Rc4 and Rm along with Ma locomotives plus numerous diesel road switchers and smaller switcher so the start was quite well equipped. Today these Rxs, durable and well suited for the Northern winters, still form the majority of Green Cargo fleet.

HectoRail of Sweden is a rapidly growing freight operator located in Sweden. Most of the company is owned by the Norwegian Høegh family. The owners have been investing heavily to the operations to keep up with the demand of capital of the fast growing operations. The sister company Höegh Autoliners has about 50 auto carrying RoRo ships.

  MTAB (Malmtrafik i Kiruna AktieBolaget)
MTAB IORE units 116 and 126 at Vassijaure tunnel, Sweden

MTAB is a daughter company owned by Swedish state mining operator LKAB. While Malmtrafik i Kiruna AB operates in Sweden there is also another daughter MTAS in Norway to handle local switching for the ore and supply trains. MTAB exclusively takes care for the road power for these countries' LKAB ore traffic.

The fleet of MTAB consists of 28 IORE units that are heaviest in the whole Europe (even Russia accounted too). There are 4 more units in order to be delivered soon. MTAB also has 3 T46-2 switchers (see lower picture), 1 T46 and 1 TMZ locomotive to handle the heavier switching. Some train services are bought outside too, mostly from Green Cargo.

For the Norwegian daughter MTAS there are 3 diesel locos for its needs.

Operations and service center for the impressive IORE fleet is located in Kiruna, where it is easy to spot the huge ore trains rolling by every hour and returning before the daybreak.

The fleet earlier had also about two dozen Dm3/Dm locos for its disposal, but now these have been retired and used only for occasional joy of tourists on Malmbana. Before IOREs many of the ore trains were pulled by El15 too. These are now in active use at HectorRail of Sweden.

  MTAS (Malmtrafikk AS)

MTAS is part of is a daughter company of the Swedish mining giant LKAB. Its main purpose is to handle switching for the mother company in Narvik, Norway.

Renfe Operadora is the Spanish national State owned rail operator. The operations concentrate mostly on the newer 1435 mm lines along with the classic 1668 mm lines, but the company also operates some 1000 mm narrow gauge lines in the North.

SJ is the Swedish state owned passenger service operator. It has the dominant market share for Swedish long distance traffic and also runs international trains to Norway and Denmark. You probably are quite well aware of the SJ operated black "virtual EMUs", coach trains topped and tailed with the Rc locomotive or the infamous X2000 EMUs.
