Helsinki Metropolitan Area Traffic

Helsinki Metropolitan area has some 1,2 million inhabitants, many of whom commute daily by public transportation paid by the cities and provided by several organizations. This page is devoted to different forms of transportation within the region and will discuss those in details (given some time).

Junakalusto Class Sm5 on test drive meets Sm4 of VR-Yhtyma in Kerava, just outside Helsinki, Finland
Finnish railroad organizations and railroad operators have their own pages, as well as the largest operator VR-Yhtyma and a newcomer to the field Junakalusto.

While much of the passenger traffic concentrates around the capital Helsinki, you might be interested in the roster pictures of VR-Yhtyma, Junakalusto and the city of Helsinki operator HKL. HKL operates the metro and narrow gauge trams

  Sm1 unit 6001/6201 of VR-Yhtymä
VR-Yhtyma Sm1 unit 6001/6201 at Helsinki Main, Finland

The first number in series Sm1 EMU number 6001/6201 has brought its passengers to Helsinki Main track 4 in the morning rush hour traffic. After other Sm1 and compatible Sm2 units pile up behind the end couplers the train, the consist will be taken to the Ilmala depot for a few hours rest. During the afternoon and the evening rush hours, it will be in service again.

The 6201 is the hald with the traction equipment, 6001 is just a driving trailer. The untis are _always_, without any exception arranged so, taht the coach is towards Helsinki.
