![]() | Île-de-France and Railways The railroading in Paris and its surroundings is a fascinating combination of layers of systems from several different time periods. All different modes exist, some fast, some slow, some even relying on rubber wheels to supplement the rails. Certain systems were first taken into use in the 1800s, some added just recently and the plans stretch far into the future to supplement the existing networks in the service of almost 12 million people living in the area!

![]() ![]() | Paris Area Local Traffic Île-de-France - the Greater Paris area - has interesting traffic patterns, numerous metro types, some now over 100 years old, some new, many going under ground, others elevated above streets, high speed high capacity RER trains connecting Paris with its suburbs, moving over ground outside the city center and diving deep into the ground in the center, local trains and super high speed trains staying at the sides of the area, the city of more than 11,5 million people can function relatively well. Some capacity limitations exist especailly with RER lines, but these are being fixed within the next years. There is even the great circle line around Paris in the drawing boards and some already built. To add to these many Paris old stations add to the railfans excitement.
