Gare de Lyon arrivals French Railroading Main Page
France is one of the three great railroading nations in Europe (the other being Germany and Russia). The volume of rail transportation here is huge, so you can find numerous rolling stock types in use.

On one subject the French are number one over all other European nations: the super high speed railroading! There is no match to over 500 TGV units running daily in France and the high speed networks of the country exceeding 3000 kilometers and still expanding. Speeds of up to 340 km/h have been reported on everyday traffic, 320 is a norm. Country also holds the current world record for speed of the conventional train: 574,8 km/h / 357 mphrun on TGV-V150. These and the French local train builder Alstom make the country an important player in railroading arena.

Organizing French Railroading
France has been very nationalistic in its railroading. Looking from outside it looks like the nation only acts in accordance to the EU rules if it has benefits to harvest. This also has lead to looking like France would not be a team player within the European Union, but just looking for its individual short and long term benefits. Starting from this it is not surprising that SNCF still seems to be involved in just about all the railroading, strange from the European perspective.

But even in France the new era is creeping in, albeit very slowly. On the freight side the move away from SNCF was almost immediate towards the more effective and customer oriented open access operators. On the passenger side the campaign is going on for the SNCF. On the maintenance side the French could not seem to get themselves organized the European way, separating the ownership of infra and operations, on the contrary, after one terrible accident the country returned back to SNCF handling this section. On the passenger side only the Paris region seems to be slowly mowing away from the old ways. Future will bring many changes, and French are very powerful in their passenger rail segment, so again seen from outside that country, why do they play like they were very weak in it?

Paris Area Local Traffic         Île-de-France - the Greater Paris area -  has an interesting traffic patterns, with numerous metro types, some now over 100 years old, some new, many going under ground, others elevated above streets, high speed high capacity RER trains connecting Paris with its suburbs, over ground outside the city center and diving deep into the ground in the center, local trains and super high speed trains the city of more than 10 million people can function relatively well. Some capacity limitations exist especailly with RER lines, but these are being fixed within the next years. There is even the great circle line around Paris in teh drawing boards and some already built. To add to these many Paris old stations add to the railfans excitement.                 The Paris Area - Île-de-France - Main Page     The local train types of Paris (RER & SNCF)      The high speed train types in Paris      The metro train types of Paris and metro history        The great stations of Paris      Pictures of Paris, Louveciennes and Versailles
