Bombardier TRAXX3 class 187 unit 002 at Innotrans 2012, Berlin, Germany

Bombardier TRAXX3 class 187 unit 002 at Innotrans 2012, Berlin, Germany

Like with any major exhibition, there were also clear trends to be seen at Innotrans 2012:

  • Many manufacturers had hybrid "last mile" solutions for display. In Europe this means that electric locomotives were equipped with a small diesel generator too.

  • Rear view mirrors were missing except in one case where it added bug like style to the tram.

  • Most bigger manufacturers had at least one electric locomotive and one or more EMUs for display. Looks like Stadler Rail AG had made the biggest efforts on putting EMUs on display.

  • Many new high speed EMUs or mock ups were on display.

  • Rebuilding of the ex. East European rolling stock to more developed forms continues.

  • Rebuilding of the current rolling stock generation continues, Swiss were very active displaying their solutions.

  • Obviously rail grinding markets are quite lucrative or the competition there is fierce.

  • The first "Genset" loco was for display from Bombardier.

  • The General Electric was displaying a huge and incredibly ugly diesel loco for European market.

The use of modular locomotives equipped with 2 - 3 'smaller' diesel motors has been common place for the last 5 years. Hundreds of older units have been built to the new form there. Europe is also following these trails with the advent of new TRAXX diesel loco with 4 motors spread evenly in the machine compartment. Here all is new and the modular design sits on the proven and reliable TRAXX locomotive.
