Alstom Alstom is one of the largest manufacturers of rolling stock and equipment. The head office is located in France as are many of the plants, but production is pretty much scattered around Europe nowadays. European wide production units include Alstom's Pendolino tilting high speed trains unit in Italy (ex. Fiat Ferroviaria) and joint ventures with Transmasholding (umbrella for Russian manufacturers). Out of the broad product portfolio the best know are TGV and AGV trains + tilting Pendolino trains. Alstom has also a product line of electric and diesel locomotives as well as local and regional EMU's and Hybrid "DEMU's". |

| General Electric GE the largest corporation in the world GE has a railroad division as well. The most known products for this area are it's North American diesel electric locomotives. These locomotives have gained a dominant market share on their home market during the last 3 decades, quite an achievement from a relative newcomer in the field! With US market falling in 2009-2010 for all players the GE has foreseen this and managed to sell several hundred locomotives of it's older model to China. There is also a demand in the former Soviet Union to modernize aging fleet of M62s, and the GE has been keen on trying to enter this huge market as well. For the next generation GE is developing hybrid locomotive, which should enter road testing phase sometime in 2010.

| EMD - Electro
Motive Division The second largest manufacturer in the U.S. market the EMD has been very succesfull in many export markets as well. The EMD was a dominant builder in the 5 first decades of diesel production. The challenge from the GE using a clever product life cycle portfolio led to almost total loosing of the markets in the next 3 decades, furthermore aided by constant troubles on the EMD engine, electrical and the crew comfort issues. After EMD regained it's independence from GM in early 2000's the most successfull models in the North American markets have been the SD70ACe nad SD70M-2. For the export markets EMD is producing the very successfull Class66 (JT42CWR / JT42CWRM) locomotives. |
