  Heavy Export Railroading in Estonia
Transoil 2Te166 number 1684 and another unit Narva, Estonia

Estonia was one of the Baltic countries the Soviet Union seized at the end of WW2. From that perspective it was only natural that the rail systems were built so that imports and exports could be done via Estonian ports, mainly Tallinn and Paldiski. When Estonia regained independence in 1991, these harbors remained important spots until 2012, when Ust-Luga new harbor was finally large enough that the modern day Russia could handle most traffic on its own soil, not relying on its neighbors. From the Russian view point this can be seen as good politics of employing their own people, but at the same time there will be lost employment opportunities on the Baltic side. Estonia however has quite a good capability of creating new work for its industrious citizens, so this will turn its view more to the Western Europe.

The 2Te116 in the picture above has been the work horse for much of the Ex. Soviet Union for transporting goods on non electrified lines.

More on 2Te116 will follow soon...
